2013 NCAA Tournament Profile: Missouri Valley Conference Champion Creighton Bluejays
Conference: Missouri Valley Conference
How They Qualified: Missouri Valley Conference Tournament Champions
The Creighton Bluejays took home the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament championship with a 68-65 victory over second-seeded Wichita State. The game marked the Bluejays’ second victory over the Shockers in an eight-day stretch to close out action prior to the NCAA Tournament.
With the victory, the Bluejays locked up their berth within the Big Dance and potentially strengthened their seeding in the process. Creighton would have danced regardless of the championship title, but it’s a testament to their potential that they were able to take care of business in both the regular season and tournament.
What You Need to Know:
Leading Scorer: Doug McDermott (23.4 ppg)
Leading Rebounder: Doug McDermott (7.6 rpg)
Leading Passer: Grant Gibbs (5.9 apg)
Bad Losses: Drake
Good Wins: Wisconsin, California, Wichita State (twice)
Creighton forward Doug McDermott is the key to the team’s success, but this Bluejays squad has experience outside of one of the nation’s leading overall scorers. A season ago, Creighton secured a tournament victory before bowing out in the Round of 32. Now however, the Bluejays are looking to cause even more damage.
Creighton’s tournament berth marks their ninth trip to the Big Dance since 1999 and 18th in school history. The Bluejays can be a real threat to create some havoc within the brackets, so this is a team that nobody wants to draw in their opening round match-up.
The Creighton Bluejays are dancing!
