Bubble Watch: Oklahoma Sooners Have Put Themselves in an Awkward Situation
Over the course of the past few weeks, the Oklahoma Sooners have seemingly played their way above the rest of the NCAA Tournament bubble.
Following a shocking, weekend loss on the road at TCU however, the Sooners face a must win situation on Thursday night in order to keep things that way. No, Oklahoma isn’t necessarily in danger of losing their tournament spot, but if they go one and done with a loss to an Iowa State team that is also considered to be on the bubble in the Big 12 Tournament, well now you got yourselves a potential pickle that Sooners’ fans certainly hoped to avoid.
At 20-10 overall and 11-7 within the Big 12 Conference, Oklahoma has done enough to dance this season. Their RPI and BPI numbers are pretty good, so there shouldn’t be too much to worry about. However, Oklahoma needs to treat their quarterfinal match-up with the Cyclones as a do or die situation, regardless.
In that loss to TCU over the weekend, the Sooners dug themselves a 22-point halftime deficit and despite a 45-26 advantage after the break, Oklahoma fell short. That’s not a good look, especially at this point in the season.
Should Oklahoma be able to advance past Iowa State in the Big 12 Tournament then that simply becomes water under the bridge. However, if the Cyclones are the ones who are victorious, well then we might have some stressful Sooners’ fans near the tail end of this week.
Tip-off between Oklahoma and Iowa State is scheduled for 12:30pm (EST) on Thursday.
