Wichita State Shockers Go Down In MVC Championship Game

Paul Halfacre-USA TODAY Sports

The Wichita State Shockers just barely lost to the Creighton Bluejays in the MVC championship game by three points. Although the Shockers would have loved to win the conference tournament and earn that auto bid, they will still be apart of the 68-team tournament field.

This game marked the second time in March that the Shockers have lost to the Bluejays. However, Wichita State did beat Creighton once this season, so at least there is that.

A win would have definitely increased the Shockers tournament seed, but at 26-8 on the season, this team will likely have to play a seed higher than it in the first round of the NCAA tournament.

On the season, the Shockers have beaten VCU, Iowa, Air Force, Southern Miss and Creighton. The computer rankings would agree that this team is definitely in the tournament, being ranked No. 36 in the RPI and No. 23 in the BPI. Wichita State was even ranked in the top 25 at one point in the season.

If it wasn’t for the Bluejays, this team would likely have a much better seed in the big dance, but now it will just have to settle for second best in the MVC, which the Shockers will forget here shortly.

Last season, Wichita State earned a No. 5 seed in the big dance, but was upset in the very first round by VCU. Those No. 5 vs. No. 12 seeds will get you every time. The Shockers will definitely not be as high as a No. 5 seed this year, but at least they won’t have to sweat it out on Selection Sunday.
