Bubble Watch: A Chance for the Iowa State Cyclones to Secure A Spot

Peter G. Aiken-USA TODAY Sports

There is not a soul on this planet who is not so secretly rooting for the Iowa State Cyclones to make the NCAA tournament more than this guy. While I didn’t grow up a fan of the team, ever live remotely near the state of Iowa or root-on for Fred Hoiberg in his NBA days — I still appreciate all of the threes that the Cyclones chuck on a nightly basis. For a lack of a better term, Iowa State is in a constant heat-check state of mind.

If the season were to end today, which it does not, Iowa State would likely barely sneak their way into the NCAA tournament. However, with an RPI of 47 and a BPI of 35, the Cyclones can put all worries to bed if they were to grab one more quality win before the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee does whatever it is that they do on Sunday.

Luckily for the Iowa State Hoibergs (I am hilarious, I know), their first Big 12 Conference tournament game is against the Oklahoma Sooners. The Sooners are a perfect team for the Cyclones to be facing. That is due to Oklahoma being an NCAA tournament quality team and one that the Cyclones have already been able to beat.

If the Cyclones were to lose, it wouldn’t necessarily mean the end of their postseason dreams. Although I doubt that Hoiberg would want to rely on other conference tournaments to play out, hoping they end in with chalk being the winner in every one.

One more win and Iowa State will definitely be in. Please, please, for the love of Sam Cassell let them get in.
