SEC Tournament Preview Round 1: No. 14 Auburn Tigers vs. No. 11 Texas A&M Aggies
Texas A&M played strong all season, but was overwhelmed by the consistent talent level in the SEC. The Aggies can boast the best pure scorer in the SEC in senior guard Elston Turner, but when he didn’t play well, Texas A&M lost. The Aggies had a chance to fight their way into the NCAA tournament after a fairly strong non-conference performance followed up by SEC wins against Arkansas and at Kentucky, but lost four straight at the end of January – killing their tournament hopes. Texas A&M should be able to seal a much deserved trip to the NIT with a win in the first and maybe second round.
Auburn has to win the SEC tournament in order to make the NCAA tournament, which isn’t going to happen. The Tigers can take some solace in the fact that they are not the worst team in the SEC as their seeding reflects – that would be Mississippi State. Auburn is young and lost a few very close games throughout the season (including a two point loss to then No. 12 Illinois). Senior Frankie Sullivan is an extremely talented player and will have an outstanding final game for his Tigers.
This game will be an intense battle between senior guards Turner and Sullivan; their college careers are at stake because the loser of this game may never see another game at their respective colleges. This game will be much closer than many people think, but the Aggies are the better overall team and should face the Missouri Tigers in the next round.
