The good news surrounding the Charlotte 49ers and their postseason potential is the fact that they do at least enter the Atlantic 10 Tournament with a little bit of momentum.
The 49ers won back-to-back games to end the regular season and this in on the heels of what can be categorized as a borderline collapse down the stretch. The only reason the word borderline is even included in the sentence is that the fact that technically, Charlotte still has a glimmer of hope at theNCAA Tournament.
It’s likely at this point that the 49ers would have to win the conference tournament to dance next week or at the most make a crazy run to the title game in convincing fashion. Charlotte won 15 of their first 17 games this year, only to break down and find themselves entering the conference tournament at 20-10 overall.
That 5-8 mark down the stretch has completely taken the 49ers out of consideration for an at-large bid at this point in the season and that’s a shame considering their start and 20 total wins. The problem however, is that their 20 wins thus far this year does not stand out within the A-10. Charlotte is one of six teams that already have totaled 20 wins this season and UMass can become the seventh with an opening round victory over George Washington on Thursday night.
So long story short is this, the A-10 is loaded and it’s going to take one serious run for the 49ers to have any chance at dancing, but isn’t that what this time of the year is all about? It’s been a tale of two halves to the season for Charlotte, so maybe they can flip the light back on here in the postseason.
