Bubble Watch: Virginia Cavaliers Should Be In Despite Loss

Bob Donnan-USA TODAY Sports

When you are a bubble team entering your conference tournament and then you beat another bubble team, you should be dancing every time. It is too bad that the Virginia Cavaliers did not get that opportunity.

Instead, Virginia just took a thumping by the North Carolina State Wolfpack and were eliminated from the ACC tournament. However, the Cavaliers did beat Maryland to close out the regular season, which should count for something. Unless if the Terrapins win the entire tournament or even beat North Carolina today.

Maryland has already upset the Duke Blue Devils in the tournament.

Luckily for Virginia, other bubble teams, such as Kentucky, have also lost and the Cavaliers have been ahead of the Wildcats in the bubble talks as of recent.

It does not help that Virginia was one and done in its conference tournament, though, regardless if other bubble teams lost or not and the tournament committee will take notice of that.

All the Cavaliers can do now is just sit and wait around until Selection Sunday. They can also hope that no underdog that was not expected to dance earns an automatic bid.

However, Virginia should be in for victories over Wisconsin, Tennessee, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Maryland (twice) and Duke. Those are a lot of quality wins for a team not to make the NCAA tournament. Not to mention, not a lot of bubble teams can say that they have beaten that many good teams. A 21-11 overall record and finishing tied for fourth in the ACC also isn’t to shabby.
