2013 NCAA Tournament Profiles: California Golden Bears
Conference: Pac-12 Conference
How They Qualified: At-Large Berth
Down the stretch and out of nowhere, the California Golden Bears ran an incredible wave of momentum to clinch a berth within the NCAA Tournament. Back on Feb. 7, the Golden Bears sat at 13-9 with uncertainty surrounding their entire season. At that point, it could’ve gone either way, but Cal dug in and made things happen down the stretch.
The Golden Bears are dancing for the second consecutive year following their incredible run down the stretch, qualifying for their 18th NCAA Tournament appearance in school history.
What You Need to Know:
Leading Scorer: Allen Crabbe (18.6 ppg)
Leading Rebounder: David Kravish (7.0 rpg)
Leading Passer: Justin Cobbs (4.8 apg)
Bad Losses: Harvard
Good Wins: UCLA, Arizona, Oregon (twice)
If you look at Cal’s resume, they don’t necessarily have any bad losses. Their worst non-conference loss came at the hands of a Harvard squad that is also dancing in this year’s field. On the other hand however, their best victories collectively have all come in the conference. The good news in this regards is most of them have come within this incredible stretch that they have been on.
California could be an interesting team to watch in this year’s bracket if they can get the right match-up. Allen Crabbe is a superstar who deserves some more credit and we will see if the NCAA Tournament provides him with an atmosphere that could quickly turn into a “coming out party.”
The California Golden Bears are dancing!
