On Tuesday, news emerged from Atlanta that Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets‘ sophomore forward Julian Royal was set to transfer from the university.
The school released a statement on Royal, who will have two years of eligibility remaining wherever he chooses to play next season. NCAA rules however, will force Royal to sit out the 2013-14 season unless he is able to obtain a waiver, likely meaning that he can return to the court for the 2014-15 season.
“I appreciate everything that Julian has done for our program the last two years and the work he has put in,” head coach Brian Gregory said. “He’s a fine young man, and he has done well in school. He’s done a great job representing our program on and off the court, and we wish him all the best.”
This past season, Royal averaged 1.7 points and 1.3 rebounds per game. Royal’s numbers decreased across the board in 2012-13, so his decision to transfer really shouldn’t come as much of a surprise. Royal’s lackluster first two seasons however, are the surprise. The 6-foot-8 forward was listed as the 69th best prospect by ESPNU Recruiting back in 2011. He committed to Georgia Tech under head coach Paul Hewitt, but was convinced by Gregory to remain committed prior to stepping on campus.
It will be interesting to see if George Mason, where Hewitt currently coaches will become an option. Georgia could be another school to keep an eye on Royal considering the Bulldogs were the team that he originally chose Georgia Tech over.
