2013 NCAA Tournament: St. Louis Billikens Show Why They’re One of This Year’s Most Dangerous Teams
There was plenty of hype surrounding the St. Louis Billikens heading into Thursday considering they were one of the hottest teams in college basketball with the 2013 NCAA Tournament getting under way. In their first game against the New Mexico State Aggies, the Billikens made a huge statement that they make one of the most dangerous teams coming out of the Midwest Region–which could make for an interesting tournament over the next couple of weeks.
St. Louis had no problems with New Mexico State in their first game of the tournament as they cruised for the 64-44 win to advance to the next round for the winner of the Oregon-Oklahoma State game. Dwayne Evans led the way for the Billikens by contributing 24 points on 11 of 16 shooting to give the team their 28th win of the season.
What’s even more impressive–St. Louis is now 16-1 over their last 17 games.
One of the most interesting factors about the tournament each year is how records never seem to matter as much as which team is playing the hottest at the right time and for the Billikens–that’s exactly the case. This team has been playing with heavy hearts over the last couple of months since the passing of Rick Majerus and if they can continue playing at this high level–there’s no question St. Louis could be gearing up for a big run in this year’s tournament.
Of course, the Billikens need to take things one day at a time–so it will be interesting to see if they come out firing on Saturday.
