2013 NCAA Tournament: No. 15 Florida Gulf Coast Shocks No. 2 Georgetown in Round Two

With the way things went during the regular season, nobody knew what to expect from the 2013 NCAA Tournament considering there was no “clear favorite” heading into the big dance. Round Two has shown a few potential Cinderella teams so far such as Harvard and La Salle, but it’s safe to say Florida Gulf Coast may be the new favorite to keep an eye on in the third round after their shocking upset over Georgetown on Friday.

It’s not often a No. 15 seed beats a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament, but that’s exactly what happened on Friday as the Eagles pulled off the biggest upset of the tournament so far with their 78-68 win over the Hoyas. Bernard Thompson (23 points) and Sherwood Brown (24 points) led the way for Florida Gulf Coast on offense in a game that will most likely go down as the biggest upset of 2013 and busted plenty of brackets.

Even if it does mess up millions of brackets, one of the best parts about March Madness is witnessing the upsets that nobody could have predicted in a million years and that was exactly the case for Florida Gulf Coast on Friday. Most of the time a No. 2 seed is an easy win in Round Two of the big dance, but like last year proved with Duke and Missouri–anything is possible when it comes to this time of year.

There’s no telling how far the Eagles will go in this year’s tournament, but they already overcame the biggest obstacle of all by beating the Hoyas on Friday–which means they may have what it takes to beat just about any team over the next couple of weeks. Keep an eye on this team once Sunday rolls around to see whether or not the glass slipper fits to be one of this year’s Cinderella teams playing in the Sweet 16.
