2013 NCAA Tournament Storyline: Colorado State Rams Trying to Save MWC Prestige

Mark Zerof-USA TODAY Sports

The Mountain West Conference has given a lot of the people who were complaining about ACC schools not getting more bids a reason to justify their spewing of the mouth. Only the Colorado State Rams and the San Diego State Aztecs remain from the league and both will need to do their fair share of winning to keep the MWC from further embarrassment.

Considering San Diego State is set to play Florida Gulf Coast next, a win would not do anything to justify its at-large birth for the NCAA Tournament. Upsets put to the wayside, the Aztecs are supposed to win that game — something you don’t get props for doing. That leaves the MWC flag carrying duties to Colorado State.

The Rams already beat a so-so tourney team in the Missouri Tigers. Again, this does not really help prop the conference up past the mid-major level. But there is some good news, or bad depending how you take it, in the very near future for Colorado State — a game against top seeded, Louisville Cardinals.

There would be no better way to shush an entire nation from calling your conference a sham, than beating the top overall seed in the entire postseason tournament. While the win might not absolve the league from losing to Ivy League schools, it would go a long way in silencing some of the know-it-all blowhards who claimed MWC impudence since Selection Sunday.

Colorado State has their chance to survive and advance against Louisville at 5:15 p.m. (eastern) today. Considering Colton Iverson only scored four points in their first tourney game and still won, the Rams have to be optimistic about their chances against the Cardinals.
