Gonzaga Becomes First No. 1 Seed to Lose in NCAA Tournament
In a tournament that’s been riddled with upsets, this should come as no surprise. The No. 9 seed Wichita State Shockers took it to the No. 1 seed Gonzaga Bulldogs in the first upset of a No. 1 seed in this year’s tournament.
Although this didn’t shock the nation like it should have, it was still surprising to see a No. 1 seed go down in the round of 32. It’s not often you see a team get 32 wins in a season, a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament and then get bounced after two lousy games on the biggest stage.
The Bulldogs were close to being upset by No. 16 seed Southern, which would have been the first ever 1-16 upset. Mark Few took this team to a 32-3 record and the best season in school history with guys like Kelly Olynyk and Elias Harris stepping up and taking this team to the tournament on a high note.
Gregg Marshall‘s squad had one of his best games as a head coach as he and the Shockers won in a game of runs.
Marshall’s team had the main difference in the game in their deep bench. The bench scored 50 points and 17 rebounds, more than half of both of their totals in those categories.
Wichita State makes their first Sweet 16 in seven years and this marks their fifth ever appearance in the round of 16. This team will look to shock the world once again and make it to the Elite Eight for the first time since 1981.
This was a tough pill to swallow for the Bulldogs as they failed to prove doubters wrong and this season will forever be considered a one-time success.
