Former Duke Star Bobby Hurley Hired as the Head Coach at Buffalo

Charles LeClaire-USA Today Sports

The Buffalo Bulls have found themselves a new head men’s basketball coach and it’s none other than former Duke star Bobby Hurley.

Hurley will replace former head coach Reggie Witherspoon, who was fired last week after 14 seasons.

A season ago, Hurley followed his brother Danny Hurley from Wagner to Rhode Island and after one year as an assistant for the Rams, he now has his first head coaching gig. Bobby was also an assistant under his brother at Wagner prior to the two making the changes to URI last off-season.

It’s a great hire for Buffalo, especially considering the work that Bobby and Danny have done on the recruiting trail within the past year for URI. Now although, they will split from the same staff, Bobby will surely be able to attract talent.

Both Bobby and Danny are the sons of legendary high school prep coach Bob Hurley Sr., who still leads the program at St. Anthony’s in Jersey City, New Jersey.

In his time at Duke, Hurley was the starting point guard for a team that won back-to-back national championships in 1992 and 1993. Hurley was named a first team All-American in 1993. Hurley was drafted in the round round of the 1993 NBA Draft, but following a car crash during his rookie season, Hurley faced a difficult recovery. He returned to the NBA during the 1994-95 season, but his playing career only lasted until 1998.

Hurley is undoubtedly a big name and a strong hire by Buffalo. The Bulls have never qualified for the NCAA Tournament and is fresh off a 14-20 season overall.

The program is certainly looking for brighter days under Hurley’s guidance.
