Wake Forest Head Coach Jeff Bzdelik Will Return to Winston-Salem
In an interview with the Associated Press, Wake Forest athletic director Ron Wellman said that men’s head basketball coach Jeff Bzdelik will return to Winston-Salem for a fourth season.
Wellman, who brought Bzdelik to Wake Forest back in 2010, praised and supported his head basketball despite some disgruntled Demon Deacon fans. Those fans however, have all the right to be upset.
Wake Forest made the shocking decision to fire former head coach Dino Gaudio following back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Tournament in his final two seasons. Gaudio, who took over following the death of Skip Prosser, took the program to new heights, including a No. 1 AP ranking.
Since Gaudio’s dismissal though, Wake Forest has been in rebuilding mode. Now, that rebuilding effort is still going on Wake Forest and despite their youthful improvement, the Demon Deacons don’t have a tremendous upside. The fact that this issue even had to be addressed following Bzdelik’s three years means that Wellman is forced to put him on a shorter leash heading into the 2013-14 season.
In his first three seasons, Bzdelik has had a couple of key recruits and pieces and hopes that this future is brighter in Winston-Salem. In fact, he better hope that the future is brighter.
In three seasons, Bzdelik has totaled a 33-59 record at Wake Forest. Prior to being hired following Gaudio’s dismissal, Bzdelik went just 36-58 in three seasons at Colorado. That’s a a combined 69-117 in Bzdelik’s past six seasons of coaching. How many NCAA Tournament appearances does he have it that span, you ask? None.
Wake Forest made a questionable hire with Bzdelik back in 2010 and now Wellman virtually as no option but to back him. With that being said, Bzdelik must produce because right now, the Demon Deacons aren’t even close to the NCAA Tournament.
Something must change next season in that regard.
