2013 NCAA Tournament: Where Are The Bill Self Haters Now?
Knowing your self-worth is one of the most important things that anyone should know.
We currently live in a world where Tubby Smith got fired because the Minnesota Golden Gophers‘ program felt they were better without the services of a National Title-winning coach, and where three straight trips to the Final Four did not buy Ben Howland enough time to keep his job with the UCLA Bruins — despite winning their conference in the same year he was canned.
It is a funny thing to think about, but Bill Self was in the hot seat himself not too long ago. While it does feel like years ago, many fans of the Kansas Jayhawks were less than thrilled with how things were going. Most of the anti-Self rhetoric came during Kansas’ three-game losing skid at the start of February.
During that period of time, Kansas lost to such abominations as the TCU Horned Frogs, and many wanted Self’s head served on a silver platter. Despite all of the tremendous work Self has done, many felt that his time has run its course with the program.
While Kansas is far and away a better program than the coaches who lost their jobs recently, it just shows how crazy basketball fans have gotten.
Someone as clearly accomplished as Self was not even allowed to lose a few games during an otherwise meaningless stretch of college hoops. Winning a National Title less than six years ago bought him less time than any sane person could have imagined. Even with numerous trips to the Elite Eight and being a still relatively young coach that teams would fight over, it was still not enough to satisfy a rabid fan base.
Self has taken Kansas to the Sweet 16 for the sixth time in his ten-year stint with the program. So I ask all of the Self haters — where are you now?
It is good to be patient sometimes, is it not?
