2013 NCAA Tournament: Bitter Ending For Cody Zeller and No. 1 Indiana
Believe it or not, Indiana sophomore forward Cody Zeller actually recorded a double-double on Thursday night.
Zeller had ten points and ten rebounds, but the sophomore forward struggled to establish any flow throughout the Hoosiers’ Sweet 16 loss to Syracuse. Zeller wasn’t the only one who struggled however, as Indiana just completely looked out of whack and out of rhythm against the Orange 2-3 zone.
Indiana as a team was 3-of-15 from distance and finished the game shooting 33.3% overall from the field. The worst stat however, was their 18 turnovers as much of them came on sloppy passes and poor decisions. As for Zeller, he struggled from the field, finishing the game 3-of-11 overall and despite his double-double performance, it was a game that certainly ranks among the worst he has had in an Indiana uniform.
Now Indiana’s players have some decisions to make, most notably Zeller and junior high-flyer Victor Oladipo. Both Hoosiers have the opportunity to be lottery selections in this year’s NBA Draft and after the result that they suffered last night, it’s just a bitter ending to the season and potentially the collegiate careers of these Indiana stars.
After the struggles that the Hoosiers’ program had endured in the past, they burst onto the scene in 2012, advancing to the Sweet 16 before bowing out to eventual national champion, Kentucky. This year however, expectations were to win it all and to have their season end in the same round as the year before is tough to swallow.
Indiana must now play the waiting game, heading into an off-season of whats ifs following their Sweet 16 exit on Thursday.
