2013 NCAA Tournament: Mitch McGary Continues to Come Up Big For Michigan Wolverines

By Dan Parzych

One of the biggest surprises of the 2013 NCAA Tournament hasn’t been just the Michigan Wolverines reaching the Final Four as a No. 4 seed, but the surprise performances by Mitch McGary. While the freshman showed potential at times during the regular season, he was never consistent enough as he seemed like he was still far away from developing into the effective player the Wolverines were hoping he would become.

However, McGary has stepped up his game during the big dance and is now a big reason why Michigan seems capable of winning it all.

The Wolverines came through with an impressive 79-59 win over the Florida Gators in the Elite 8 on Sunday to advance to their first Final Four since 1993. McGary was a key factor once again for Michigan as he contributed 11 points to go along with nine rebounds–providing a spark for the Wolverines from the beginning as they jumped out to an early lead and never looked back.

When looking back at this tournament, nobody could have predicted McGary to look as impressive as he recorded 20+ points and 14 rebounds in each of the team’s previous two contests against Kansas and VCU. The Wolverines were one of those teams that nobody knew what to expect in the tournament.

Now, this team looks to be one of the most dangerous teams in the Final Four and could easily be cutting down the nets one week from Monday night. And if that does happen–the Wolverines will be extremely grateful for McGary taking his game to a whole new level over the last couple of weeks.
