2013 NCAA Tournament: No. 9 Wichita State Shockers Only Beat Two Tournament Teams In Regular Season

After the amazing Cinderella run that the No. 9 Wichita State Shockers have gone on, it is interesting to note that the Shockers only played two teams in the regular season that made this year’s Big Dance.

Those two teams were the VCU Rams, who earned a No. 5 seed and the Creighton Bluejays, who earned a No. 7 seed. Not to mention, the Shockers played Creighton three times this season and only beat them once and lost two games to the Bluejays in March.

Well, apparently being tournament tested during the regular season isn’t always the most important factor when deciding how well a team will do in the dance. If that was the case, Wichita State would have been long gone. Wichita State wouldn’t have beaten No. 1 Gonzaga and No. 2 Ohio State. Wichita State wouldn’t have made it to the Final Four.

Although the Shockers only beat two tournament teams during the regular season, they also beat Southern Miss, Iowa and Tennessee on the year, who were all bubble teams at the very end of the season.

Whether the case, Wichita State is not here by luck. Its defense has been great and it has been outplaying every single team that it has faced so far. It is not like the Shockers have been getting extremely hot from behind the arc, although they did make 14 threes against Gonzaga.

Everyone just underestimated how good this team really was, especially when it comes to defense.

Although the resume wasn’t the most impressive thing in the world coming into the dance, Wichita State could probably care less at this point.
