Dan Hipsher has spent the past years as the associate head coach at Alabama, but now he is moving on from the university after Texas-Pan American made the decision to tab him as their next head basketball coach.
The announcement involving Hipsher’s hire actually went public on Thursday, but his press conference was scheduled for 4:00pm (EST) on Friday.
Hipsher began his coaching career as an assistant at Dayton, but has had prior head coaching stints at Stetson and Akron. Since leaving Akron in 2004, Hipsher has held prior assistant positions at Arkansas, South Florida and his most recent stint with the Crimson Tide under Anthony Grant. During his time at both Arkansas and South Florida, Hipsher served as an assistant under Stan Heath.
Texas-Pan American was a member of the newly formed Great West Conference this past season, but the school is preparing for a move to the WAC next season. The Broncos finished the 2012-13 season with an overall mark of 16-16. Justin Leathers, who averaged 7.3 points per game this past season, is the team’s top expected scorer.
Texas-Pan American made the decision not to renew the contract of Ryan Marks and will move forward with Hispher in their journey to the higher conference.
Hipsher will need to recruit at a better clip than UTPA is used to, but considering his past experience, that shouldn’t be a problem moving forward.
In his time as a head coach, Hipsher has compiled a 238-182 record overall.
