2013 Final Four: It is Zone Up or Shut Up for the Syracuse Orange
Outside of Kevin Ware‘s leg going in totally different directions than intended, nothing has gotten more buzz heading into the Final Four than the Syracuse Orange and the zone defense. Nobody has been able to escape the zone banter.
Now the zone is going to be on full display for the entire nation. Hardcore and casual fans will be turning in to see if the Orange can zone out the Michigan Wolverines. Everyone wants to know if the Wolverines will shoot their way out of zone-hell.
The zone, if the other teams cannot hit jumpers, can prove to make some ugly basketball games. At the same time, however, it could alter the way an opposing team will try to alter its chances of success. Michigan may look to push the tempo, get the ball in the middle of the zone, or just rely on long-range bombs from another state.
The hype surrounding this zone defense coming into the game has made it one of the most hated “stars” of Final Four weekend. The zone would not be so special if it were not for the talented players utilizing it. It has gotten to the point where a 2-3 zone has overshadowed individual Syracuse players.
In a few hours, the world will find out what all the zone-fuss is all about. For the sake of an entertaining game, lets just hope it is not as dominant as it has been throughout the tournament. Not to say I am rooting against the Orange; although I have completely zoned out for any zone talk.
Death to the zone!
