Ben Howland Interested in Rutgers Scarlet Knights Coaching Position
Even with no athletic director, a scandal for the ages and a bottom-feeder program, the Rutgers Scarlet Knights have a coaching position that needs filling and the buzz is starting to pick up. According to a CBS Sports report, former UCLA Bruins coach Ben Howland may be interested in taking on the role of main-man-in-charge.
The university is still feeling the aftershocks from the Mike Rice scandal. Howland, on the other hand, is looking for employment after not living up to the Bruins’ insane level of expectations.
CBS Sports is reporting that their sources have indicated that if Howland were contacted, that he would be more than interested to hear what they have to say. Howland is no slouch, as he led the Bruins to three straight Final Fours, seven appearances to the big dance, and has strong ties to the northeast basketball community.
Howland would be going to a situation where the expectations would be no higher than a midget kneeling down. That is in stark contrast to his days of trying to live up to the ghost of John Wooden (fair or not. UCLA expects to win a lot).
The marriage of the two would not come at a better time either. Howland needs to reinvent his image of being a poor tournament coach (lately) and Rutgers, well, they need to move on from a scandal which has give the program its only shine in the history of its horrible lifetime.
So far, apparently, there has only been third-party contacts between the two. If an agreement is to be made, expect it to happen much sooner than later.
