Akron Zips Offseason News, Notes and Tidbits

Nobody in the entire history of the world loved watching Zeke Marshall play more than me. I had such high hopes for the Akron Zips — mainly because of my unstable man-love for Zeke — that I am distraught that their season ended in the way it did. The Zips headed into the NCAA Tournament minus a guard, who was dealing with legal issues, then got their rear-ends handed to them.

Now, Akron has to move on to life post-Big Zeke. Gone are the days of watching the seven foot behemoth running around and swatting opposing players’ shots out of the gym. In his place, well, there is not going to be another Marshall lining up to take his place. Instead, Akron is going to rely on more of a team effort going forward.

According to Don Ake, of AkronSportsNow.com, some good news is about to hit the program. Ake reported that at the team’s basketball banquet, a source told him that Demetrius Treadwell and Nick Harney are going to be granted one more year of eligibility  That is huge, if not only for the experience but for the Zips’ need to have good players on their roster.

Ake also reported that head coach, Keith Dambrot, let the audience know that one of their key recruits grew an inch taller. That is right Zip fans, Kwan Cheatham is now 6’10. Which might not sound that exciting, but his newly found size will surely help the Zips replace a few inches in the exit of Marshall.

Life following the Zips will never been the same without Marshall. However, it doesn’t mean they can’t continue their winning ways.
