Virginia Cavaliers Starter Paul Jesperson Leaving Program

Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

Players usually don’t leave a team when they are a starter unless it is to go pro. In rare instances, however, a player may see their future as a starter in jeopardy and bail from a program before they even lose their starting gig.

Well, Virginia Cavaliers starter Paul Jesperson must have a crystal ball as the team announced through an email that he will no longer be a member of the program.

This has nothing to do with a lack of playing time last season. Jesperson started 33 of 35 games for the Cavaliers while averaging over 25 minutes per game. It has more to do with Justin Anderson becoming an integral part of the lineup — making next year a more uncertain situation of Jesperson.

It seemed pretty obvious, especially towards the end of the year, that Anderson would be taking over Jesperson’s spot in the starting rotation next year.

Jesperson did not really have an impact with the Cavaliers as far as statistics go. The sophomore averaged under five points and just above two rebounds a game. I am sure Virginia is sad to see him go and lose the depth he brought, although his productivity should be pretty easy to replace.

As for Jesperon, he will have two years of eligibility remaining. There has been no reports as to where he may be transferring or if he has been contacted by schools. He happens to call Wisconsin his home state, so going closer to home is not out of the realm of possibilities.
