Antonio Barton Leaving the Memphis Tigers
Lost in all the pub about Joe Jackson returning to the Memphis Tigers next season was that Antonio Barton is going to transfer from the program. While losing five points per game is not a huge loss in productivity, coupling the transfer with some other exits does mean that Josh Pastner has a slew of roster issues that needs fixing.
To be fair, although, Pastner does a tremendous job as a recruiter — so it is safe to assume that Memphis will be just fine.
Barton appeared in 26 games for the Tigers this past season. Reportedly, he is going to attempt to graduate this year, which would make him eligible to play from the get go for another Division I school.
Somehow, his transfer went really under the radar. I don’t know if it was because of his limited impact on the team or how the Jackson news overshadowed it. The Jackson coming back to the program announcement, however, is really not as surprising as everyone treated it. I mean, was he a lottery pick or something?
For Barton, it has been suggested that he may want to be closer to his home in the Baltimore area. It will be interesting to see which teams come to court Barton, as he is a better player than his stats suggest.
The Tigers will be fine without him though. Pastner is always bringing in very good recruiting classes and does have Jackson for one more season. Memphis will likely be the favorite to win the conference next season yet again.
