Wichita State Shockers Big-Timing it Now
I bet your mothers told you the same thing mine told me: that we should never let success get to our heads, and that being humble and staying true to ourselves is an important part of who we are as people.
Well, the Wichita State Shockers basketball program was not given birth to by a mother. Instead, they are going to start letting the success they have had and use it to start big-timing their program.
It is going to start small for the Shockers. Outside of making sure they lock up Gregg Marshall for the long-term, there is not much they can do to make their program feel or appear bigger than it actually is. The program, however, is going to try to at least make it appear they are attempting to make it feel bigger.
Wichita State used to hold their annual college basketball award ceremonies in a banquet-like setting. There was no need for them to do anything other than rent out a hall and hand out some trophies. Now, thanks to a Final Four run, a banquet hall is not enough to quench the Shockers’ thirst for feeling more relevant and having that big-time program feel.
The Shockers have moved away from the bingo hall type of setting and used Koch Arena to hold their annual award ceremony dinner festivities. Because, you know, the program is “above” being shoved into a smaller banquet hall.
Of course, I am only kidding about them big-timing their way through the offseason. Although, I do think it is worth pointing out that when a university starts treating their sports programs as a bigger deal, the programs, in turn, start succeeding like one.
