Syracuse Orange Surprisingly Finished 5th In Big East Standings

Daniel Shirey-USA TODAY Sports

Not like it really meant anything for the 2013 NCAA Tournament, but the Syracuse Orange surprisingly finished fifth in the Big East standings in the 2013-13 college basketball season.

The Big East was once again a great conference this season, but apparently finishing three games back of first place in the conference did not have any indication on how Syracuse would play in the Big Dance. Syracuse did make it all of the way to the Final Four and all.

Not to mention, the Orange were able to knock off arguably the best team in the nation during the regular season in the Indiana Hoosiers. Nothing like handing the “best” team a good old-fashioned booty whopping by only giving up 50 points to the them.

Before the Big Dance started, Syracuse was knocked off by the Louisville Cardinals, but before that game the Orange won three in a row, including against two ranked opponents. It is the three-game losing streak in late February to early March, though, that pretty much killed it for Syracuse when it came to winning the regular season title.

Syracuse still managed to finish 11-7 in the Big East and as a result of a deep run in the NCAA Tournament, the Orange won 30 total games on the year, which is always a successful season. The Orange may have not finished how they would have liked in the Big East Conference, but they rubbed that off by making a Final Four run, showing that any team can get hot at any given time.
