A Look At Cody Zeller’s Two Seasons With Indiana Hoosiers
It was amazing that Cody Zeller was not a one-and-done player, so although the Indiana Hoosiers would have liked him to return for his junior season, they should feel blessed. Zeller had two great seasons for Indiana, so let’s take a look fruther at both seasons.
Here are the numbers for Zeller when he played in a Hoosiers uniform:
Freshman season: 15.6 points per game, 6.6 rebounds per game, 62.3 percent FG%
Sophomore season: 16.5 points per game, 8.1 rebounds per game, 56.2 percent FG%
As you can see, Zeller did not get that much better statistically. However, his rebounding did get noticeably different, which will be huge at the next level. I never understood why a player’s draft stock would go down if they did not perform way better the next season statistically speaking.
In Zeller’s case, Indiana had arguably the best offense in college basketball this season, which meant people other than Zeller scored the basketball. He only took on average about one more shot per game, which is why his points per game only increased slightly. His field goal percentage did decrease a little, but not enough to drop him in the 2013 NBA Draft.
Zeller was still one of the best players in the nation. So what if another player looked better on the team. Victor Oladipo is a freak and had one heck of a season. Oladipo should be honored for that, rather than Zeller being looked down upon.
Sure, other players did look better than Zeller on the season, but that does not mean he will be good or bad at the next level. The Hoosier put together two amazing seasons for Indiana and he will likely go down as one of the all time greats in school history.
At 7’0”, Zeller will attract many teams in the NBA draft. Not to mention, he has so much talent and could very well be the next great center at the next level.
