Remember when Lou Holtz used to do his best to make you think that the Sisters’ of the Poor had a legitimate chance to beat the Notre Dame Fighting Irish? How, no matter how trivial the game, Holtz made every team they were about to face sound like they had 50-plus All-Americans on it?
Of course you do. It is part of what made Holtz great and memorable. Fast-forward a couple years, and now it seems like someone is taking his tactics to another level — kind of.
Kansas Jayhawks coach Bill Self was at a fundraiser when he openly admitted that the Oklahoma State Cowboys are going to be the favorite to win the Big 12 Conference next year. Since Marcus Smart was passing on millions to stay at least one more year with the program, OK State was leaps and bounds better than anyone else in the conference.
The biggest difference between what Holtz did and what Self did now is the fact what Self said is logical. He is not telling you how Southwest Missouri State Community College Tech is going to win a National Title — he is just saying what everyone is thinking.
Still, it was a little surprising to hear an opposing coach talk about the in-conference schedule and play so early in the season. Regardless, Self was so spot-on with his assessment, maybe there is a job in Vegas after his coaching career is done handicapping games.
