The Saint Louis Billikens had a season to remember, but one loss ruined their 2012-13 college basketball season.
Saint Louis not only won the Atlantic 10 regular season title, but also the conference tournament. On the season, the Billikens beat New Mexico, Butler (3x), VCU (twice) and La Salle. VCU and Butler were the talk of the conference for most of the year, but Saint Louis clearly stole the show and only lost a total of three games in the conference.
As good as all of this was, Saint Louis lost its second game of the 2013 NCAA Tournament. This was a team that was being predicted to make a deep run as a No. 4 seed and it managed to get upset by the No. 12 seed Oregon Ducks.
Give Oregon all of the credit in the world–they shouldn’t have been a No. 12 seed though–but it was very disappointing to see Saint Louis go down so early in the Big Dance.
The Billikens looked great in their first game of the tourney, winning by 20 points and only allowing 44. One game can change a lot, though, and this was definitely the case for Saint Louis.
This is a team that went on a 16-1 streak dating back to Jan. 19. Once you reach the tournament, though, it doesn’t matter if you are a No. 1 seed or snuck into the dance by winning your conference tournament. All that it takes is one loss and you are done. Saint Louis had a great season and that cannot be taken away from it, but what a disappointment the Billikens were come tournament time. That was kind of the theme of the A 10 Conference in the NCAA tournament this season though.
