Georgetown Hoyas will be Fine Sans Otto Porter Jr.

Debby Wong-USA TODAY Sports

A lot is going to be made in the coming months over Otto Porter Jr. taking his talents to the highest levels of hoops. While plenty of the attention will be hurled towards Porter and his potential as a player, a slew of negative press will surely find its way towards the Georgetown Hoyas. Folks will question if the team will be as successful without Porter as they were with him. To that, I say hogwash!

There is nothing in the history of a John Thompson III-led Hoyas team that leads us to believe that they won’t continue to do good things next season. Despite Porter being considered a “star”, most Georgetown teams don’t feature such a player.

In fact, Thompson uses a more ‘team as a whole’-like philosophy. That is not saying having Porter as a player was a horrible thing, but losing him is not a deathblow to the program or even the 2013-14 season.

Georgetown will return another slew of talented — albeit it, not stars — players. Thompson will continue to implement his slow, methodical offense as well as his beat-you-to-a-pulp defense. That is not to mention that it seems like every year, a “new” big time player steps up for the Hoyas and find their way to some level of stardom.

Oh, and there is also what you would consider a success for the team. Let us not beat around the bushes. Georgetown always has regular-season success and as of late has found it much harder to parlay that into NCAA Tournament glory.

There is a zero percent chance that the Hoyas miss the big dance next season. So, unless your expectations for the program was to win a National Championship — Georgetown will be a-okay next year, even though it is sans Porter.
