Damon Stoudamire Reportedly Be Hired By Arizona Wildcats as an Assistant

Steve Dykes-USA TODAY Sports

Remember Damon Stoudamire? No, not the figment of your imagination or the player at the tail-end of his NBA career. The one who was a pivotal member of the Arizona Wildcats during their heyday of dominating the world of college hoops (same guy, but two different levels of awesome).

Well, Stoudamire has been an assistant coach for a few years now with the Memphis Tigers. Although, reportedly, not anymore.

The Arizona Daily Star has been reporting “while not official” that Stoudamire would be returning to his alma-mater as an assistant coach. The Star tried to reach Stoudamire for comment, but no phone calls were returned as well as calls sent to the Arizona program. Still, because Stoudamire recently thanked Memphis coach Josh Pastner for his two years with his program, all signs are pointing to him joining the Wildcats as an assistant.

Stoudamire has been busy since his 13-year NBA career came to and end. After finishing his journey as a Rookie of the Year to eventually becoming an average player in the league, Stoudamire took on several different roles in basketball.

Pastner hired Stoudamire two years ago as an assistant after Stoudamire spent some time in the NBA as a player development-type guy. Stoudamire has already thanked Pastner for giving him a chance. In fact, if we didn’t know any better, we would think Stoudamire had the plague as he was quoted as saying, “he hired me when nobody else wanted to hire me.”

Who in their right mind wouldn’t want to hire a guy who has been successful at every task he has set out to take on? Regardless, a formal announcement can come at some point during this week — assuming Stoudamire does not reconsider leaving Memphis.
