The Michigan State Spartans very well could be the No. 1 team in college basketball next season. However, they will have a very tough test at the beginning of the season, when the Spartans take on the North Carolina Tar Heels in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge, according to The Detroit News.

Michigan State will pretty much have the same team as last season, which is depressing in no way. The Spartans earned a No. 3 seed in the 2013 NCAA Tournament and finished just one game back in the Big 10 standings.

As good as the Spartans will be, North Carolina will be returning plenty of talent and will definitely give Michigan State a fight for its money in this one. Although the season is a long time from now, both teams have a good chance at starting the season in the top 10, which will make this matchup even more exciting.

Not to mention, Tom Izzo and Roy Williams will be coaching against each other. In case you didn’t know, both of those coaches are kind of good and you can say that they have left a good mark on college basketball so far.

Last season, Michigan State played the Miami Hurricanes in the challenge, but lost that game.

This could be a season for the record books for Michigan State, considering that Keith Appling, Gary Harris, Adreian Payne and Branden Dawson will all be returning. All four of those players averaged near 10 points or more per game on the season. However, it is the Spartans’ defense that makes them so good.

North Carolina will provide a great test early in the season and it will be a March Madness like atmosphere right off the bat.
