A lot has been done about making high school athletes’ recruiting process a financial “win” for universities and TV networks. College football has a signing day that is nationally televised, while college basketball has dozens of websites that “scout” as well as list potential landing spots for each individual prospect.
While it might be morally odd, it is rather victim-less as the players seem to enjoy the attention and the spotlight thrust upon them.
Some of the athletes enjoy the process so much so that they hype up their own recruitment on Twitter or other social media platforms. Since some of them are becoming brands before they step foot on a college campus, it is nice to get a palette cleanser every once in awhile.
This is why Martin Gerben is so refreshing. Gerben, who is a three-star prospect, picked up a scholarship offer from the Notre Dame Fighting Irish — which was his third big school offer in a week. Gerben told Notre Dame Scout that he was “honored” to receive the offer.
Gerben talked about not having any early favorites as far as landing spots, but did talk about the Irish. It was a nice gesture by the high school player to put one of his offers in perspective. It must not be lost on him the magnitude of what his life may become and how his decision will alter a slew of programs’ futures.
He also mentioned that academics will be his primary concern while weighing his scholarship offers, which is to say it looks like this kid has his priorities in order, and wherever he decides to play basketball will end up being the right decision.
