Frank Martin: A Carolina State of Mind

The University of North Carolina and the University of South Carolina have only met on the hardwood once in the past 15 years and that meeting took place in Las Vegas.

UNC will play USC twice in the next three years while their women’s hoops teams play basically every single season. It is time for these two bordering states to start battling it out on the hardwood and that is exactly what Gamecock coach Frank Martin wants.

At South Carolina, Martin wants to strengthen the Gamecocks non-conference schedule and what better opportunity is there to do that than adding a top-10 program to your schedule?

Roy Williams and Martin have not talked about renewing the rivalry, but Martin feels like it would be a great thing for these two schools to begin facing off against each other again.

Martin is looking to build a big-time program at South Carolina and he has a lot of work in doing that. However, he needs to get his team against better non-conference opponents to have his squad ready for conference play.

Not only is Martin looking to start up a series with North Carolina, but he also said he wouldn’t rule out playing other ACC teams. The ACC is the closest power conference to South Carolina and it is also the best conference around with the new additions.

What better way could USC strengthen its schedule than with ACC opponents?

I would love to see the rivalry renewed and it would be a great thing for both teams if Frank Martin could get his wish.
