Luckily for the Creighton Bluejays, Doug McDermott will be returning for his senior year. However, what happens once he is gone?
It is not like Creighton has only been good while McDermott has been on the team, but he is a huge part of their offense and it will be a big loss once he does graduate after the 2013-14 college basketball season. Replacing 20+ points per game from one player is almost impossible after one season.
The Kyle Korver days were awesome, Nate Funk put up some big numbers and McDermott has been arguably the best player in school history, but who is next up in line? There was no other player on the Bluejays that averaged at least 10 points per game, other than McDermott this past season. The incoming recruiting class doesn’t look anything close to Kentucky‘s–obviously.
Maybe Creighton will become more team oriented? Maybe they will be in rebuilding mode for a little bit? Maybe there will never be as good of a player as McDermott ever again? As you can tell, there is a lot of maybes with this situation and not enough answers.
For the time being, fans will just have to enjoy McDermott’s last season with the team. Hopefully, the future will be even brighter, but it is hard to tell right now.
Even with McDermott, this team has not made a deep run in the Big Dance for some time now, but it has competed in its conference many, many times. Maybe McDermott will take this team to new heights in the upcoming season, but sadly, it will be his last year with Creighton and who knows what will happen to the Bluejays once he is gone.
