Villanova Wildcats Should Like Their Chances In New Big East

Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports

The Villanova Wildcats may have had an early exit in the 2013 NCAA Tournament, but they should like their chances in the new Big East in the 2013-14 college basketball season.

The new conference will have plenty of talent, but this is a team that finished just four games back in the standings in the 2012-13 season when the Big East was absolutely stacked.

The top dogs of the conference in the upcoming season will likely be Marquette and Georgetown. Luckily for Villanova, it beat both of those teams this past season. Not to mention, the Wildcats beat the Hoyas when they were ranked No. 5 in the nation towards the end of the season.

That alone should give the Wildcats a lot of confidence entering next season. A lot of talent will be coming back as well and it always helps a team’s self esteem when they beat three top five teams a season ago, which is the case with Villanova.

However, Butler, Creighton and Xavier should compete for a conference title and once again, Marquette and Georgetown will likely be the favorites entering the season. St. John’s is set to finally meet expectations under Steve Lavin as well, so the Red Storm cannot be counted out.

Villanova did beat St. John’s twice last season, though, just for the record.

This Big East Conference will have plenty of old faces, but it will also have some new ones. The season may be far away, but the Villanova Wildcats are talented enough to make the Big Dance once again and they will always be a dangerous team under Jay Wright.
