North Carolina Tar Heels Guard P.J. Hairston Reportedly Arrested on Drug Charges

Bob Donnan-USA Today Sports

North Carolina Tar Heels guard P.J. Hairston is an on-the-rise contributor in Chapel Hill and he very well could be set on a breakout season in 2013-14. However, according to ABC11 in North Carolina, the 6-foot-5 junior-to-be was arrested on Wednesday night.

According to the report, Hairston and two other men were arrested and charged with possession of marijuana. Ironically enough, he was arrested in Durham, North Carolina — home of the Duke Blue Devils.

Police say that Hairston was stopped a little before 10:30pm (EST) at a license check. Hairston was also charged with driving without a license, according to the ABC11 report.

“We are aware of the situation involving one of our athletes,” UNC Senior Associate Athletic Director for Communications Steve Kirschner told the local correspondent. “We are still gathering information and may comment further later.”

At this point, it remains to be seen what will unfold for Hairston and his positioning within the men’s basketball program and the university. North Carolina will surely release some more details as they gather the necessary information. Hairston made the decision to bypass the 2013 NBA Draft this past spring and return to school. The Tar Heels have an increasing amount of hype heading into the 2013-14 season because even despite the loss of Reggie Bullock, North Carolina is also welcoming back star power forward, James Michael McAdoo.

More details on the incident and arrest are sure to come forward soon enough.
