Memphis Tigers Leaving Is Great News For Southern Miss Golden Eagles

The Memphis Tigers will not be part of the Conference USA in the 2013-14 college basketball season, which is good news for the Southern Miss Golden Eagles.

The Golden Eagles will be losing some talent in the upcoming season, including Dwayne Davis, who lead the team in scoring, but there is still plenty of talent returning to the team.

If it weren’t for the Tigers, Southern Miss would have won the conference this past year, since they did finish second in the standings with a 12-4 record. Not to mention, it lost to the Tigers three times on the season, which was probably a big reason why the Golden Eagles did not dance.

They did manage to make the NIT, however, as a No. 1 seed. It will be interesting to see if this team can make the NCAA tournament next season, but if they win their conference tournament, that will obviously be the case, thanks to that whole automatic bid thing.

There will still be some competition in the conference, so it is not like Southern Miss is the only team that will benefit from the Tigers leaving. Still, based off of this past season, the Golden Eagles should like their odds for winning a conference title in the upcoming season, along with making the Big Dance for the fourth time in school history. It will be interesting to see how Southern Miss fares with some great talent leaving, but there are enough players coming back for it to make some noise in the 2013-14 season.
