Call the Atlantic 10 whatever you want, but it is still not considered a power conference in college basketball. With that said, the VCU Rams are still technically a mid-major team, despite the fact that they will be one of the best teams in college hoops in the 2013-14 season.
The Wichita State Shockers are coming off of a Final Four run that pretty much no one predicted, but the Rams will still be the best mid-major team in the nation.
The Shockers will be returning plenty of talent, but so will VCU. This could very well be the best Rams team ever and they will prove that on the court once the season actually starts. Wichita State should win the MVC and make the NCAA tournament once again, but it will not be better than the shockers.
Sure, these two teams do not play in the same conference or anything like that, but being the best mid-major gives a team some serious bragging rights.
Shaka Smart has led VCU to some pretty good times, but there is a chance that his team competes for a national title in the upcoming season. That is how good the Rams could be.
They won 27 games last season and although they got blown out by Michigan, they still earned a No. 5 seed in the 2013 NCAA Tournament, which is very impressive.
Wichita State, VCU and other mid-major teams will enter the season with just as much hype as the big boys in college hoops, but it is the Rams that should really have everyone excited.
