The Southern Miss Golden Eagles are coming off of a season where they barely missed out on the 2013 NCAA Tournament and recorded 27 wins on the season. However, are they the team to beat in the Conference USA entering the 2013-14 college basketball season?

Let’s put it this way, if they are not, who is? Memphis will no longer be in the conference, which will pretty much open up the Conference USA to any team.

Southern Miss did win 12 games in the conference last year, though, and also finished second in the standings–behind Memphis of course. Sure, Dwayne Davis will no longer be on the team, but the Golden Eagles will still have plenty of talent.

I am not saying that Southern Miss will run away with this conference, but its biggest challengers in the upcoming season will be UTEP, East Carolina and Central Florida–based off of last year’s standings.

Once again, this conference will likely only get one bid for the dance in the upcoming season. I am guessing that bid will come by a team winning the conference tournament and I am also guessing that team will be the Golden Eagles.

Really anything could happen, especially in conference play, but Southern Miss does not look like it will skip much of a beat, even with some key players leaving.

This team only lost four games in conference play last year and two of those games were against the Tigers. However, that does not mean that it won’t be an exciting race in the Conference USA because that very well could be the case.
