Just this past season, the Wichita State Shockers made a surprising run to the Final Four, as the headlines and attention gave the school an opportunity to continue their progression forward under head man, Gregg Marshall.
Well, on Monday afternoon, news emerged that Marshall had hired a new addition to his staff, agreeing to bring on Steve Forbes. While you may not instantly know the name, Forbes is one that is recognizable in the coaching world. He has spent the past two seasons at Northwest Florida State, a junior college, and guided a squad which featured Chris Jones, one of the best JUCO recruits in the nation, to back-to-back National Championship game appearances. Prior to that however, Forbes had been essentially banned from the Division I ranks for his connection to the staff at Tennessee under the Volunteers’ former head coach, Bruce Pearl.
Forbes was not the center of attention during Tennessee’s violations and he seemingly got dragged into the mess simply by association. But that’s how it works. With Marshall’s hiring however, Forbes becomes the first member of that Volunteers’ staff to re-join the Division I ranks and with that being said, a great addition for the future of the Shockers’ program.
Forbes was an assistant to Pearl in a time where Tennessee enjoyed their most success and his track in two quick years at Northwest Florida State speaks for itself. There’s no doubt that Forbes is going to be able to help Marshall and Wichita State attract higher recruits and that’s exactly what the school will be in search of fresh off their run to the Final Four.
This is a great addition for Marshall and the Shockers and a fresh start for Forbes at the Division I level.
