Virginia Cavaliers Forward Akil Mitchell Breaks Hand, Suffers Off-Season Setback
On Wednesday afternoon, the Virginia Cavaliers announced that freshman guard Taylor Barnette had made the decision to transfer elsewhere. In addition, reports surfaced that junior-to-be forward Akil Mitchell has suffered a broken hand and is expected miss the next 4-6 weeks while recovering.
The injury news to Mitchell is tough to hear for the Cavaliers, but obviously if you are going to break your hand it’s better that it happens in the summer months than in the heat of ACC play. Mitchell will miss some crucial time with the injury however, as he looks to take the next step in his career with the Cavaliers.
According to Whitelaw Reid of the Daily Progress, Mitchell suffered the injury while competing in a recent basketball camp.
Last season as a sophomore, Mitchell had a breakout year and he has became a key piece of the improvement of the Virginia program under head coach Tony Bennett. Mitchell improved his scoring number by nine total points per game this past season, averaging 13.1 points per contest. At 6-foot-8, he has molded himself into a double-double threat each night, making huge strides inside while also averaging 8.9 rebounds.
Mitchell should be healthy again by the end of the summer, which allows him to get back into the flow of things prior to the start of practice and the 2013-14 season. The setback though does throw a monkey wrench into his off-season improvements, but recovery now becomes the most important factor moving forward.
