P.J. Hairston Admits Car Rental Was For Him; NCAA Will Reportedly Get Involved Soon

The status of North Carolina star guard P.J. Hairston has remained up in the air over the course of the past month or so and the university and head coach Roy Williams have remained mum on the entire subject.

Williams has already stated that he doesn’t plan on addressing the issue or punishing Hairston for his arrest this off-season until all the details are known. Well, according to a report from the Raleigh News & Observer, the police report claims that Hairston has admitted that Haydn “Fats” Thomas, a convicted felon that was in the car with Hairston and one another male at the time of their arrest, rented the GMC Yukon for him. Thomas told reporters in the past that he rented it for the other male in the car, but that doesn’t appear to be the case at all.

Hairston claimed that Thomas rented the vehicle to him so that he could drive to Atlanta to meet up with some friends. So, outside of the whole legal aspect in which Hairston was actually placed under arrest and charged driving without a license and a misdemeanor marijuana charge, is the angle that deals directly with impermissible benefits and Hairston’s eligibility. If Thomas indeed rented the GMC Yukon for Hairston, that would correlate as a possible NCAA violation.

According to Gary Parrish of CBS Sports, the NCAA is expected to get involved in this case very soon. Obviously at this point, that’s something that must be done.
