The world of AAU basketball has quickly transformed into a haven of power and its impact on college basketball recruiting has become a force that has certainly changed the way things are carried out these days.
From national recruiting services to top notch programs that travel around the country, the impact of AAU basketball has given power, and even fame to certain founders and program directors. Curtis Malone was one of them.
Malone is the president and co-founder of the DC Assault, one of the nation’s best AAU basketball programs. It is based out of the Washington D.C. area and it has helped produced numerous Division I basketball players over the past decade or so. In turn, Malone has become a figurehead on the AAU circuit. From Jeff Green to Michael Beasley, the DC Assault program has made quite the impact on college basketball and even beyond.
According to a report that emerged from Washington D.C. on Monday afternoon however, the face of the DC Assault is unfortunately not the leader that he had become over the past decade or so. Malone was arrested on Friday and charged in a DEA drug sting operation that had been ongoing for over a year ago. He was charged with federal drug charges that included one kilo of cocaine, 100 grams of suspected heroin, a handgun, and unnamed items associated with selling heroin.
Talk about a mess and talk about someone that you don’t want to see around kids, especially on the rise basketball stars trying to earn college scholarships.
