Sure, the season hasn’t even started yet, but ESPN’s Jeff Goodman has them ranked as the No. 2 team in the Big East power rankings.
That is quite the honor for the Bluejays since they were playing in the MVC just this past season, which is considered as a mid-major conference. Apparently, there is nothing mid-major about Creighton.
The biggest reason for this ranking is likely due to the fact that Doug McDermott will be back. He is arguably the best player in college hoops or at least will be once the season starts. He did score 23.2 points per game and 7.7 rebounds per game last season. He has one of the best shots in the game and he cannot be stopped on the offensive side of the ball.
McDermott is not alone, though, as the team will basically be the same.
It is all fine and dandy that Creighton is ranked this high, but the conference standings will change all season long with so many great teams set to compete.
Ahead of the Bluejays is Marquette and behind them is plenty of great talent. Villanova, Georgetown, Xavier and St. John’s will all be good enough to compete for a Big East title. If Butler can somehow figure things out it will also win quite a bit of games in the conference.
So although these ranking virtually mean nothing other than bragging rights, putting Creighton at No. 2 makes perfect sense.
