Are the Georgetown Hoyas A Top 5 Team In the Big East?
The Georgetown Hoyas did not have the best offseason of all time or anything close to it. They lost Otto Porter Jr. to the NBA draft and Greg Whittington tore his ACL. With that in mind, are the Hoyas a top five team in the Big East?
According to ESPN’s Jeff Goodman they are. In a recent power ranking of the conference, he has Georgetown ranked as the No. 4 team. Considering the two big losses that this team has suffered, I would say that is pretty fair.
If Porter Jr. would have come back, the Hoyas would have been a top five team in the rankings. That is not a guarantee, but that is how important he was to the team.
Now, players like Markel Starks will have to be that much better. Like most Georgetown teams this one will have a bunch of talent. So although fans will miss Porter Jr. in the 2013-14 season, they can still expect their beloved team to compete for a conference title. With that in mind, they are losing two very good scorers and their two best rebounders. Players will clearly have to step up, but all is not lost.
The three teams ranked above the Hoyas in this power ranking are Villanova, Creighton and Marquette. Considering all of the talent that those three teams will be bringing back that sounds about right. However, do not sleep on Xavier or St. John’s. In fact, I think the Red Storm should easily be ranked in the top five of the Big East, thanks to all of the talent they have.
