The Xavier Musketeers did not have the best season last year, but that could change in the 2013-14 college basketball season. In a recent power ranking, the Musketeers are looking solid.

In a power ranking by ESPN, Xavier was ranked No. 5 in the Big East.

There will be plenty of great teams in this conference once again, despite the fact that it will look much different. Before Butler lost its head coach, it was supposed to challenge for a conference title. However, it is being ranked No. 8 in this power ranking.

Another team that could have been ranked ahead of the Musketeers is the St. John’s Red Storm. The Red Storm come in at No. 6, which is way too low for them. They arguably have the most talent in the conference and so many players will be returning.

Whether the case, after finishing 9-7 in the Atlantic 10 last season, Xavier could have been ranked lower in this power ranking of the Big East.

It may be a top five team in this conference and it may not be. We will find that one out soon enough once the season actually starts. However, the Musketeers finished last season with an overall record of 17-14. ESPN has to see something good in this team for them to be ranked this high in the Big East. The fifth best team in the standings is not going to finish with a 17-14 record this year.

I am sure it helps that leading scorer Semaj Christon will be back for another season.
