The Southern Miss Golden Eagles will be losing their best player for the 2013-14 college basketball season. All that means is Jerrold Brooks is going to have to step up, but is he one of the best mid-major players in the country?

Brooks’ stat line last season was 10.9 points, 2.5 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game. Not out-of-this-world amazing, but still pretty good. He did manage to shoot 41.3 percent from the field and 36.1 percent from behind the arc.

His 74 threes were good, but he is capable of draining more. With more attempts, Brooks is easily capable of busting out 100+ threes in the upcoming season and at a high rate.

He led the team in makes from behind the arc this past season and there is no reason why that won’t be the case in the upcoming one. Dwayne Davis is no longer on the team, which hurts the Golden Eagles, but Brooks needs to score more points as a result and be the go-to guy.

There are going to be so many great mid-majors out there this year, which means there will be plenty of talented players on those teams.

Can Brooks really be one of the best out there though? Well, his shot would say so. Southern Miss averaged 74.4 points per game last season (30th in the nation) and if it plans on scoring that much once again, players are going to have to step up. That is where Brooks comes in. Expect him to have a breakout year and expect him to be one of the best mid-major players.
