Kansas State Wildcats' Non-Conference Schedule Is A Bit Disappointing

The Kansas State Wildcats were one of the best teams in the Big 12 last season. Heck, they were one of the best teams in college basketball which is why they earned a No. 4 seed in the NCAA tournament. However, their non-conference schedule for the 2013-14 season is a bit disappointing.

The best team that K State will play is the Gonzaga Bulldogs, who lose their best player. The Wildcats will also play Ole Miss, who lost a bunch of talent and who knows if Marshall Henderson will be in the lineup.

On one hand, the Wildcats play a weak schedule, but on the other, they are losing their top two leading scorers from last year’s team. So I can see why the program has scheduled a pretty easy out-of-conference schedule. Still, this has been a great team in the Big 12 over the years.

Kansas State will also play Long Beach State, which is a team that usually has a very tough non-conference slate despite being a mid-major.

There is no doubt that the Wildcats will take a step back in the upcoming season. They are not going to win a conference title. The Big 12 title will likely be won by Kansas–what a surprise–or the Oklahoma State Cowboys. However, they can’t expect to finish with a mediocre Big 12 record and make the dance.

Big wins in the non-conference schedule are huge for any team’s resume. Of course, Kansas State could beat Ole Miss and Gonzaga. Both victories would look pretty good come March and that may need to happen depending on how the Wildcats finish in the Big 12.
